The 21-year-old fresh graduate from Batangas joined Pinoy Idol of GMA-7 in 2008 when she was just 16 and finished in 7th place to the winner, Gretchen Espina. Penelope, a perennial singing champion in contests and raring to fight for her family, was visited by host Robi Domingo to bring the good news.

Performing Beyonce's Love on Top, Penelope made three chairs to turn for her, and later chose Apl de Ap  over Sarah Geronimo and Lea Salonga as her coach.

Japs said that he idolized Bamboo and felt the groove of the song. However, the rocker didn’t turn his chair for him. Instead, coach Lea Salonga was the one who pushed her button for the 16-year-old Bulacan native.

"I will teach you how to find your own voice. That’s why I’m so excited I turned my chair for you," Lea told Japs Mendoza.

Finding the artist as moldable, the Truth reprise of Japs and Bamboo justified, according to coach Lea her decision to pick the teenager as he has a lot of potential. Watch Bamboo and Japs Mendoza Truth duet below.

Joining Japs Mendoza in Team Lea is his fellow Bulakenyo Rainier Acosta, who advanced to the Battles on Sunday's episode together with former Pinoy Idol Top 7 finalist Penelope Matanguihan (Team Apl) (watch Penelope's performance here), beauty queen Lecelle Trinidad (Team Sarah) and student Talia Reyes (Team Bamboo). The Voice of the Philippines Battle Rounds Airs July 28 | Battles Stage and Set Total Level Up

Posted on July 11, 2013 | 12:44 PM

The highly anticipated Battle Rounds of The Voice of the Philippines happened on July 8 and 9 at the ABS-CBN Studio 10 (ASAP Studio), three weeks ahead of its scheduled telecast.

The set and lighting of The Voice of the Philippines Battle Rounds- Toni Gonzaga on top of stage with the coaches and advisors seated on red chairs [courtesy of The Voice PH]

In the Battle rounds, the four superstar-coaches Sarah Geronimo, Lea Salonga, Bamboo and Apl de Ap trimmed down the number of members in their team by pairing them up in a singing showdown happening atop a stage similar to a boxing ring (see photo above).

The two-day taping saw 24 battles but compared to its US and UK counterparts, The Voice of the Philippines will have a triangle fight which means that some battles will have three members in the showdown instead of just two. The triangle fight was due to a surprise twist to be revealed later this month, adding one artist per team instead of the original 12.

According to a reliable source, one of the triangle fights will pit Deb Victa, Nicole Parada and Angelique Alcantara of Team Bamboo against each other (Check out all the artists per team as of the latest Blind Auditions).

In all the battles, only one artist who impresses their coach will advance to the live shows which will happen at the Newport Performing Arts Theater in Resorts World Manila.

The Battle rounds of The Voice PH was also made unique by the presence of each team's advisor during the battles. The "trusted advisers" (Joey Ayala for Team Bamboo, Gary Valenciano for Team Sarah, Gerard Salonga for Team Lea and Arnel Pineda for Team Apl), helped the coaches in honing their respective artists prior to the Battle rounds.

According to Coach Lea Salonga, the Battle Rounds will start airing on July 28 which means, five more episodes of the Blind Auditions are expected to air. "Lima na lang ang natitira [na episodes of Blind Auditions]. Battles start on Sunday, July 28!!! Promise, iba na ang suot!" replied coach Lea to a fan on Twitter.

Hosted by Toni Gonzaga with Alex Gonzaga and Robi Domingo, The Voice of the Philippines airs Saturdays at 9 p.m. and Sundays at 8:15 p.m.

The biggest and the grandest reality singing search on Philippine television, The Voice of the Philippines will premiere on June 15 (Saturday).

The pilot episode will feature the most exciting part of the competition which is the "Blind Auditions". In this phase of the competition, the coaches will screen the "invited contestants" (those who passed the different levels of auditions prior to the blind auditions) with their backs turned to them.

If the coaches like the contestant's voice and wanted that artist to be part of his/her team, then they will push their button to turn their chairs around and face the contestant. In the event that two or more coaches choose a particular contestant, they will have to convince the auditionee to pick them.

After the teams were formed, the coaches will mentor the contestants and pit two of their members in a 'sing-off' during the "Battle Rounds" to determine who will advance to the "Live Shows," the final phase of the competition.

The Voice of the Philippines is hosted by Toni Gonzaga with Robi Domingo and Alex Gonzaga as social media correspondents (aka V Reporters). It will also feature four superstar coaches namely Sarah Geronimo, Bamboo Mañalac, Lea Salonga, and Apl.de.Ap.

Don't miss The Voice of the Philippines Primer, Mic Test this Sunday, June 9 after Rated K and the show's premiere on June 15 (Saturday) after MMK.
